Rebecca Karl will introduce her newly-published book, The Magic of Concepts: History and the Economic in Twentieth-Century China (Duke 2017). Based in a consideration of the Marxist-trained economic philosopher, Wang Yanan, the talk considers how the different but linked attempts to write and think China in global history and global history in China in the 1930s and the 1990s can illumine theoretical problems in the historical conceptualizations of economic practice.

Rebecca E. Karl teaches History at New York University. In addition to the book upon which the talk is based, she is the author of Mao Zedong and China in the Twentieth-Century World: A Brief History (Duke 2010) and Staging the World: Chinese Nationalism at the Turn of the Twentieth Century (Duke 2002). She is co-editor/co-translator, with Dorothy Ko and Lydia Liu, of The Birth of Chinese Feminism: Essential Texts in Transnational Theory (Columbia 2013); and, with Xueping Zhong, of Cai Xiang’s Revolution and its Narratives: China’s Socialist Literary and Cultural Imaginaries (1949-1966) (Duke 2016).
